How can ED meds help?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a condition in which a man finds it difficult to get or maintain an erection long or firm enough for sex. In Singapore, ED is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions that men experience, with 51.3% of Singaporean males above the age of 30 experiencing some form of ED (Tan et al., 2003).

According to a study by the University of Wisconsin Urology Department, the risk of ED increases as men age, affecting approximately 10% of men per decade (i.e. 50% of men in their 50s, 60% of men in their 60s). This is also linked to the increased risk of other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and vascular diseases, which are more commonly experienced as men age.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

ED can be caused by physiological or psychological reasons, or a combination of both. Some common physiological causes are health related issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and aging. These conditions can affect how well your blood is circulated around the body, and blood flow to the penis is crucial to help produce healthy, hard erections.

Psychological causes include depression, anxiety and stress, disorders which can affect your overall mood, libido and sexual satisfaction. In this case, mental health therapy may be required for treatment. For more details about the symptoms and causes of ED, read our post here.

ED treatments include medication, therapy or a mix of both, but finding out what is causing your ED is the first step. If you are experiencing ED, speak to a doctor through the Noah platform to get treatment.

How do you know if you have erectile dysfunction?

Occasionally, men can have difficulty getting and maintaining an erection, and that is completely normal and should not be a cause for concern. However, if the problem is persistent, if you experience this more than half the time, or if it is affecting your relationship or well-being, then it is recommended that you speak to your doctor to assess the issue in order to get treatment. At Noah, this can be done in a matter of minutes.

What type of erectile dysfunction medication do you prescribe?

According to the Singapore Urological Association, the mainstay of oral treatment for ED is phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors. PDE-5 inhibitors work to increase the rate of blood flow to the penis, which causes it to remain erect (Goldstein et al., 1998).

The four PDE-5 inhibitors that doctors on Noah prescribe are Sildenafil (generic Viagra), Cialis (Tadalafil) 20mg and 5mg, and Spedra (Avanafil). Find out more about these medications here.

Is ED medication effective?

Studies have shown that oral ED medication is generally considered very effective for the majority of men. However, it is important to consider that everyone’s reaction to a treatment is unique, and ED medication that works for you might not work for the next guy.

Your Noah doctor will be able to prescribe a medication and treatment plan that is suited to you. If you have any questions on medication you have been prescribed on the Noah platform, regarding side effects or more, you can send your doctor a message directly from your account here.

What are the side effects of erectile dysfunction medication?

All medication has side effects, however you may or may not experience them. Common side effects for ED medication include facial flushing, dizziness, headache, stomachache, runny nose or nasal congestion and body aches, including back pain.

For second-generation ED medication Spedra (Avanafil), it has been reported that men experience fewer side effects when taking this medication, due to the newer formula. Read more about Spedra here.

Why do I need to know my blood pressure to get an ED prescription?

Your blood pressure is an important indicator to determine if ED medication is safe for you to take. If your blood pressure is too high or low, it can be dangerous for you to take ED medication. During your medical evaluation, you will need to enter the most recent blood pressure reading you have had in order for your doctor to accurately prescribe you medication. If you are unsure of your blood pressure, you can bring this up to your doctor during consultation.

Can a doctor diagnose erectile dysfunction remotely?

Yes, for most cases. ED can be diagnosed by a doctor remotely based on a patient’s medical history and symptoms.

Noah’s expert doctors use telehealth technologies to diagnose ED following the same conventions that are used to diagnose patients in-person. Doctors use a series of questions to assess your symptoms to ensure that a prescription of ED medication is appropriate and safe for you. This is why it is vital that when you are completing a medical evaluation on the Noah platform, you provide thorough, honest and accurate information for your doctor to diagnose your ED and create a suitable treatment plan.
